She's talking to herself again. Or at least she claims to be, even though there's no device, such as italics, to separate her "voices." Unfortunately, neither of her voices is funny or pleasant to read. Still.
This week's Jemelism: "I love Prince, but his nickname should be Charmin."
Posted by Mediocre Fred at January 30, 2007 01:16 PM | TrackBackThe worst thing about Hill's writing for me, as a person who doesn't follow sports, is that I never know what she's talking about. It's like listening to the popular girls at school talk about the people they know and I don't. My favorite sportswriters -- nonfiction writers generally -- are the ones who can make me feel included in the conversation. The paragraph about Prince actually was the only one that made sense to me. (I assume you use the term "Jemelism" for something only Ms. Hill would write, as her remark works in context: she starts the para saying he's gone soft, and concludes it saying his nickname should be a brand of soft toilet paper.) Everything else utterly confused me -- I had to look at the caption of the photo to work out that perhaps Smith and Dungy's race was being discussed because they were (fact that the sports-ignorant won't know) both coaches. Yes?
