Killer kite festival battle for Pakistan's soul

I can't decide what the most amazing part of this story is:

(1) that 14 people died at a kite-flying festival,
(2) that this is apparently typical and expected,
(3) that Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf believes that "enlightened moderation" includes supporting a festival that kills a dozen-plus people a year, or
(4) that Islamic fundamentalists, the same people who are totally cool with suicide bombers, are opposed to the kite-flying festival on humantiarian grounds.

What a world we live in.

Is it just me, or does this sound like the plot of a South Park episode?

I would consider only the kid who died from the glass-coated string to be a direct casualty of the festival. The four people who died from celebratory aerial firing (which I assume means "Pakistani rednecks shooting off their guns") are casualties of a stupid international tendency among some gun owners not to treat their guns seriously; falling off rooftops, electrocution and brawls are simply Darwinian weedouts.

I agree with PG. I find no tragedy in this, save the one kid who died from GLASS COVERED STRING. Shouldn't there be a rule against that? If people are going to get together at a freakin' KITE festival and kill each other, they deserve to die.

PG and ensie: Fair point, as people who are inclined to behave like morons will find some way to do it, festival or not. But the article still struck me strange.

Oh, and ensie, I'm pretty sure there is a rule against the glass-covered string.

I confess to some bias in favor of kite festivals just because they're a bit part of the Afghan novel The Kite Runner.
